Historic Hood River
Winter Fun
12-21-2021

Notes
Today is the official first day of winter. It’s somehow reassuring to note that winter fun hasn’t changed much in 100 years. It looks like this boy has made the most of a thin, wet snowfall to make a snowman and play with his sled. This is from the Blythe-Marlor collection, circa 1916. The boy may be George Finley Marlor, Samuel Blythe’s grandson.

We used to go sledding on Experiment Station road.

9th street was used for sledding too. The newspapers had reports of injuries from sledding accidents.

Snow clothes have improved tremendously, but some of the best fun we had sledding was in metal dish pans.

When I first saw this picture, I had a flashback to the scene in Citizen Kane…and Rosebud.
