Historic Hood River
White Salmon River, Before
10-22-2020

Notes
This view of the White Salmon River from Arline Moore’s album is captioned, “White Salon River approximate location present North Western Lake- 1912.” I’m not sure if that is Max Moore standing on the rock, but we know he worked on the Condit Dam. About a year after this photo was taken this section of river was inundated, only to be restored to free-flowing state in 2011. It would be interesting to see what this spot looks like now, after decades under water and an active restoration project.

In the process of freeing the river and removing an outdated electro hydro dam, the community lost a favorite local gathering place. Cabins left high and dry, water supply issues, and no longer a place to wade and swim. Progress is sometimes painful.

I do not think this is Max Moore, as I knew him very well for many years. This appears to be too old of a man for Grandpa Moore when this photo was taken. Also the body structure is all wrong. My idea is that this was taken by him, if it appears in an album that she had.

Looks messy. Could be a flood, could be a slide, or could be debris from clearing land for the dam. By the looks of the boulders, I think it looks more like a slide.

I agree, Charlott– Max Moore probably took the photo of someone he was working with.
