Historic Hood River
White Salmon, 1911
1-25-2021

Notes
A friend of mine found this in an antique store and shared it with us. Ralph Brown with the West Klickitat County Historical Society dates it to 1911, since it has some buildings which were not in the 1910 Sanborn map and it includes some buildings which burned in the 1912 fire.

At first I thought that was a power line in front of us, but it is a barb wire fence.
Appears to be more buildings than the 1905 Pano photo.

What a peaceful looking drive down the hill on Jewett St compared to today's rat race and I bet travelers didn't have to keep their foot on the brake to keep their speed at 35 mph.

If you enlarge the photo, you can see two men visiting along Main St.
Thanks to your friend who visited the antique store.

The real clincher on determining the date was the houses that Clinton Wolfard built 1911 for his sister and himself, that are still there today on Jewett just south of the library. There are other buildings in this photo that are still there today, The Gillett building the NW corner of Jewett & Main, the White Salmon Valley Bank administrative building and the Pioneer building on Jewett. The quality of the picture and of the scan allows a very good view of the Ward house, The Colburn Hotel, The Waldo house on nob hill, and the Cameron farmstead. Not to mention the Groshong blacksmith shop, never seen on any other photos of the area.
