This may be the same burn we saw a while back in this photo, though that was in the 1950s and there is some evidence this is in the 1920s or 1930s. Can you identify the location of this mountain lake? Extra credit for a modern picture.

It always amazed me that the old timers could name a landmark for its appearance, when they couldn’t see it from the air and it was surrounded by trees.
It looks like some of the lakes in the Mt St Helens area after the blast, except all of the trees would be laying in one direction on the ground.

That’s an easy one, it’s Warren Lake. I believe that’s the Columbia Gorge down below the lake. From Warren Lake you can’t see Mt. Hood though.

Looks like the fire mosaicked (is that a word?). There are quite a few unburned trees in the foreground among the burned timber.

I’ve hiked up from the Columbia and it’s a pretty difficult and steep hike if that’s the hike they are referring to. From the old parking area above the lake it’s a pretty easy hike down to the lake.

Tom Kloster has an article stating that Warren Creek is named after Warren "Barney" Cooper, but he doesn’t say anything about Warren Lake.

There were several forest fires near there (I know Rainy Lake suffered) in August 1919. The fire lookout on Mount Defiance was constructed in 1923. This doesn’t prove anything, but I can’t find any better information.

Looks a lot like Black Lake to me, it’s close to Rainy Lake.

Terrific photo! I agree that it’s Warren Lake, as well — it would have been a short scramble from the road to the Mt. Defiance Lookout to this overlook above the lake. According to Oregon Geographic Names, both the lake and creek were named for Warren "Barney" Cooper, which makes sense (as the creek flows from the lake). Another nice Alva Day shot!
