Historic Hood River
Where Am I?

Notes
I don’t recognize this outcropping. I presume it now has a less offensive name than the one burned into the negative. Anyone have an idea? I bet it’s in Scott Cook’s book but without a name it’s hard to find.

My first thought was Sacagawea and Papoose Rocks on Table Mt, but I can’t find a close photo match.

Sleeping Beauty was sometimes known as Squaw Mountain, but I don’t think this is Sleeping Beauty.
It looks like there is a good trail to the top.
Wikipedia says the term squaw was not used among Native Americans or First Nations. That’s not true. I have heard the term used often amongst First Nations people.
Dr. Bruchac, of Abenaki descent, wrote an interesting article about the word:

It’s not Sleeping Beauty.

There is a Squaw Butte north of Indian Heaven Wilderness and west of West Twin Butte near Mosquito Lakes but I don’t think this is it.

I think you were correct Arthur. This photo was likely taken from the southwest. Most people photograph it from the southeast.

I spoke with Kate to clarify her comments: she believes this is Sacagawea and Papoose Rocks viewed from the SW, which is not the usual approach anymore.
