Historic Hood River
Where Am I?
7-14-2014

Notes
We haven’t had a Monday mystery for a while, so here’s an extra hard one. I was walking someplace in Hood River when I stumbled (literally) on this broken sidewalk with a set of 100 year old child’s hand prints. Do you know where this is? Hint: it’s a very appropriate location.
Extra credit if you can identify the child.

charlott
I think it is right near the library
Judy
I think it is near where Park Street School used to be (now the children’s park).
Arthur
Two excellent guesses, but no…
P.A
Bright Beginnings church?
Arthur
I’ll leave this one open a few days, with a hint: I know the hand print is >100 years old because the sidewalk has a date stamped on it by the workmen.
Jeffrey Bryant
The 100 year old sidewalk sounds like State Street or Oak Street.
Melody Shellman
Actually, the old neighborhoods on May, Montello and Prospect have 100-year-old sidewalks as well. I know of some footprints that are nearly 50 years old on the corner of 4th and May. They’re barely visible now; you wouldn’t know they were footprints unless you’d seen them back in the 70s.
Arthur
Melody is onto something…
Norma
One hint is Arthur’s classification of "downtown" for this picture.t
BOB
I think i have seen this by the old catholic church lot on montello and 4th or maybe between montello and prospect on 4th
l.e.
I’m going to throw out a couple of guesses on the child.
Herbert Scobee or Malcolm Kresse?
Melody Shellman
The old Catholic church was on 7th and Prospect.
Norma
Actually, the front door of the old Catholic Church was on 6th and Montello. I walked by it every day I went to school for 5 years.
Jim Gray
the Church was on 7th and Montello there is no 6th and Montello
Judy
Whatever the address, PLEASE tell us, Arthur!, where are these handprints?
Arthur
OK, Judy: Go to the front of the May Street School, cross the street, and line yourself up with the flagpole. You’ll be within a foot of the prints.
The Heights sidewalks are full of history like this. While you’re at it, check out the inscription on the bell at the school entrance.
Judy
Also there is a nice "plaque" at the base of the flagpole @ the HR Middle School, meander by & take a read.
Mike Childs
How about the horse tie rings still on affixed in the curb at state and ninth in front of the church.
