This is the home of Dr. Howard and Kathryn Dumble. He came to Hood River in 1901. It is located just up the hill from the Lutheran Church on your right.

I often think of this photo as I wind my way down the hill past the park. When you are driving, you don’t have much opportunity to glance up at the house, but the difference in landscaping from then and now is worth parking the car and getting out to have a look.
It is hard to put that bare hill in perspective.

Northwest corner of 9th and Sherman? If it is, it now has that interesting telescoping stairway that makes it look bigger and grander.

I’ve released the comments from the moderation queue. I guess I confused a bunch of you with this experiment to delay publishing comments until noon.
As many of you guessed, this is the Dumble residence on 9th and Sherman. It was occupied by Dr. Shaw when this image was taken– his name is on the plaque by the door. Many of you know it as "the house with the bear", and we’ve seen it a few times before as l.e. notes.

Nope….didn’t confuse me. Just didn’t want to post the previous photo and give away the answer. My first post was to make sure it didn’t appear.
In its prime, that house had quite the view. Not so much now.
I would still like to know if a creek ran down that gully? Or would the road to the Coe home have run up this gully?

Dr. Dumble also owned land up on Fir Mountain at one time. I am not certain whether he ever actually had a home up there. Will try and check it out.

This home was one of the first to have central heat with hot water radiators and a beautiful parquet floor. I believe it is still on the National Register of Historic Places. (can someone check this out?). The cut/bank is part of the change in the contour of 9th street second construction period. We have previous images of this work in progress. The present river rock is the final work of this bank as we see it today. Too bad this same type of rock wall had to be removed in the present day State Street construction. This was the area west of 2nd street Park.

Dr. Howard Dumble was also a one time mayor of Hood River.
