Notes
Welcome back to the new and improved Historic Hood River. While we’re on a new platform, we’ve kept the same basic organization so we can work out the kinks. It will be much easier for us to improve the features and design, but for now the goal is to find any bugs which crept in during the moving process. Please leave a comment right at any post you think has a bug– we’ll see the comment and fix the bug.
As for features– note the “Recent Comments” pane to the right which lets you see comments on all posts as they come in. Also note you’ll be able to insert real live links in your comments– and the links you inserted over the last 12 years are all now clickable.
This view of the construction of the Hood River Waterfront Park was taken in January of 2008. This image shows some of the lesser known aspects of the park construction. To construct the swim area and beach, it was necessary to cut onto the rip rap which delineates the edge of the waterfront. In the original construction, rock was placed around the perimeter (I am told it was rock from excavation of the Dalles Dam, but haven’t verified this). Then fill was dredged from the river channel and dumped within the rocky outline.
As the rock was removed to make the beach, it was brought to a rock crusher which reduced it to gravel, then up the conveyor belt you see framing the image to make a large pile. That gravel was then loaded on trucks, and what wasn’t used on site was brought up to Oak Street for use in the urban renewal project which was rebuilding Oak Street at the same time. There was lots of noise and dust at the waterfront and downtown that year.
