Here’s a 1950’s view of Wa Na Pa Street in Cascade Locks with some buildings that survive. The Union 76 station is now a Chevron station and the cafe is closed, but these two buildings are recognizable. Cascade Locks used to have many service stations competing to meet the needs of drivers on the Columbia River Highway, but with I-84 bypassing the downtown most are gone.
The Purity Market looks like every other grocery store in the 1950s. Do you remember S&H Green stamps? I was surprised to learn they date back all the way to 1896. They were the ancestor of modern “rewards” programs.

I believe that it’s Carroll Tveidt behind the counter on the right. Carroll and his wife Ferne had the store in Cascade Locks then built Columbia Market (aka Tveidt’s Sentry) on WaNaPa. That was in the early 70’s. He was a good friend of ours.
