Historic Hood River
US Bureau of Public Roads
8-23-2019

Notes
A caption on the reverse explains this is a “US Bureau of Public Roads shed for maintenance storing vehicles, tools, etc. It was below Homestead Inn.”
The car bears a 1939 license plate. The Bureau of Public Roads was a distant predecessor of today’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). I’m not sure the new name is an improvement.

Wish my Dad was here and he could tell us exactly where below Homestead this was located. I remember him telling that he worked on that road for a period of time. That was after he was "the chore boy" at Homestead Inn.

I don’t remember hearing about Homestead Inn, and there were no tags for it, so I googled.
Came up with this photo, but I still don’t know anything about it other than it must have been on the way to Cloud Cap?

I thought we had some photos of Homestead Inn way back when. Yes it was located on the road to Cloud Cap, just very near to the present day Cooper Spur Ski area. The old ski trail went right by it when I was growing up and skiing at Cooper Spur. When I was a child the old chimney was still standing. Here some probably 12 years ago I went there and found the chimney, fallen naturally and under some bushes. Bill Pattison was with me and we outlined the foundation of it, in a pouring rain. Doubt if much remains now as they have done considerable logging in the area.
