Notes
For many years the steeple of the United Brethren Church at 6th and Oak was a distinctive part of Hood River’s skyline. The church was located on the NE corner, which now holds the Oaks apartment building.

Nice Steeple …When did this church disappear(did it burn down?) I wish it were still part of HRiver’s skyline! Dates, anyone have dates of destruction of this simple beauty!

This church appears in the 1916 Sanborn map but not in the 1928 map. The 1916 map lists the spire at 50′, though the 1909 map says it is 75′. 1902 and 1905 map have it at 70′.

Don’t know too much about this particular church. I do know that in the 1880’s they owned a portion of what is now Mountain View Cemetery.

Assuming that the entry doors are a pretty standard 7′ high, then indeed the little ball on top of the spire is right at 70′ high from floor level of the front porch.

What a beauty! And it appears to have a second floor eave amongst the tree limbs, and a basement or considerable space with a north side entrance. May be to take in wood for the furnace.

Longshot
Where the gables come down against the walls of the tower/steeple, I wonder how they ever kept that from leaking. That would be hard enough to do with all the roofing products available to us today.

I have found today in my great-great grandma’s personal Bible a church bulletin in nearly perfect condition from this church, dated January 1908 (it was folded in half, so there is only the crease). Naturally, after locating this, I was curious to see if this church still existed so that I could share this with them. If there is any sort of museum which would like this bulletin, I’d gladly submit it, as I’m certain that she’d like that to be so. The congregation was a great support to her husband during his final years. His funeral service was held in this church in January 1908, and he’s buried nearby there in Hood River as well. If the curator of this website could please contact me about any information of who to submit the bulletin to, I’d appreciate it. Thank you!

The spire of the U. B. Church was removed on 19 January 1925, along with the bell. The new owner, Albert Kreig, was going to remodel and convert the building into a modern apartment house.
