Historic Hood River
United Brethren Church
9-11-2026

Notes
This is a very early view of the United Brethren church at 6th and Oak (NE corner) where the Oaks Apartments are today. We’ve seen several views of it through the years, but this early one shows how undeveloped that end of town was back then– and I can’t resist a good cyanotype. The spire to this church was visible in so many of the early downtown images we’ve studied. We learned quite a bit about the structure in the comments to this post, including that the spire was removed in 1925 to convert it to apartments. I have trouble believing today’s apartments are using some of this structure, but anything is possible.

Every time I see a photo of this church I say, “beautiful building.”

Yes, it definitely made a statement. This cyanotype is my favorite view, with the picket fences and the blue tint.
