They look like happy people. Usually people look so dour in old photos. Must have been fun to take a ferry across the river.

It appears that the tug is partially visible on the right side. Where did the name Underwood come from? Sure hope she dismounted before the ferry left the dock……..

Underwood was named for Amos Underwood (and family) He was an early settler in the area. He married the daughter of Chief Cheniwith, who was hanged with 8 other tribe members at "The Cascades" by the U.S. Army, after what is known as "The Massacre at The Cascades. It is thought that he and his small tribe were not involved, that it was the Yakima, which fled back into the hills. The army was basically on a "witch hunt" and Cheniwith was the first little band they came upon. His daughter was Taswatha/Ellen and she had been married, according to Indian custom to a William King Lear. He had been reposted and she elected not to leave her people. Amos Underwood married her both by indian custom and later by white man custom. He raised her daughter, Isabella, by Lear. Later his much younger brother Ed Underwood married her. Some of my cousins are great-great grandchildren of Amos and Ed Underwood.
