“UCM Ranch”

This is the start of the UCM Ranch that Messrs. Uptegrove, Cornell and Mason built in 1909 near Parkdale. They called this building “The Bungalow.” According to this article in The Hood River Glacier, in 1912 Cornell came back from a quick visit to New York with a housekeeper to take care of this place, as well as Uptegrove Cornell and Mason. I can only imagine what Mrs. Holmes (who it turns out was Gifford Uptegrove’s sister) thought when she arrived here from New York City.
We know this ranch house existed at least into the 1940s or 1950s. Walter Mason was friendly with a Princeton classmate Eugene Euwer, who started farming in the same area about 1915. Eugene Euwer’s daughter Virginia remembers that house as where Mason’s widow Ida May raised their children. She thinks it may have been on Hutson Road. She adds Eli and Bernice White lived there at a later date.

Interesting structure…was this a two story building, with a second floor with rooms? With the shadows on the upper portion, it’s hard to see what we are looking at.

kmb, it’s a two story building with the upper windows in deep shadow. The eaves seem unusually long.

Now UCM, Now you don’t..
In September 1913 the misters U. C. and M. entertained over 100 guests at a garden party. Most of them had been recent residents of the Atlantic coast.
I saw the changes to HR with the wind surfing boom. UCM and their real estate business must have made huge changes to the upper Valley with land sales to east coast residents.
