Historic Hood River
Tunnel No. 5
6-2-2023

Notes
Alva Day visited the construction site for Washington SR14 in January 1936. There is a helpful sign indicating this is Tunnel No. 5. It looks like the railroad tunnel is almost complete, and the crew is starting work on the automobile tunnel.

Alligator Rock. Sturgeon fishermen use this rock.
Wouldn’t the railroad tunnel already have been completed in 1908?

Good weather for January.
So this would be a mix of Railroad and highway workers?
Shovels scooping dump truck dumping"¦so much to see!

The ramp seems to be sending barrels down to the construction site. Any ideas what they are?

GREAT picture….sure agree with Pat!

Nels, like you, I am wondering what the ramp is for. Alva Day might be standing on the new overpass that is being built over the RR tracks. Were they able to haul supplies this far on Hwy 14 and unload them onto this ramp?
L.E.
I am wrong that this is Alligator Rock. This is Owl Rock. RR tunnel 5. Hwy 14 tunnel 4.
