It looks like they waited until after the final school bell rang before trimming the tree. This photo is from Wyeast High School in the early 1950s. Thanks to Alan Winans for taking the photo and Paul Kollas for preserving the negative all these years and steering it our way.
All of us at Historic Hood River and The History Museum wish you the happiest of holidays. Make some family history and take lots of pictures to remember it.

Its been a long time since I saw a Christmas tree decorated with tinsel.

Trying to figure out what that round thing is on the wall?? Looks like a door stop, but there is no door.
Putting the tinsel on was fun. Taking it off and putting it back in the box…..not so much.

This is where the tree at Wy’east was always placed. No doubt by the time on the clock this was after classes had ended. I think this might have possibly been under the direction of Home Economics.
This is prior to 1955 and the girls, both from Pine Grove are Mary Ellen Harlan on the left and Patsy Torres on the right.

It appears there may be a door frame just out of the picture frame on the left.
The wall covering behind the tree appears to be lap board siding – was this common at the time as an interior finish?
I wish the picture was in color. Better yet, I wish we had scratch-n-sniff technology. Nothing reminds me more of my childhood Christmases than the scent of a fresh Douglas fir. And removing the tinsel after.

All this talk about tinsel brought back a painful memory of being cut by tinsel when I was very young and it was still made from metal. I’m still hesitant to touch the stuff.

Charlotte, is this outdoors? I seem to see a door sill on the left with a doorbell and lap siding?

For the comment regarding the door stop, I believe that would be the south wall of the ‘old foyer’ and I think that the bookkeepers office was on that wall.

The door stop is for 1/2 of the double door that went into the gym. It isn’t a door bell. No this is not an outside photo, but in the main lobby next to the trophy case.On that same southern wall was the office of the girls rep. which was first Vera Parrott when I started school and then Billie Doke. Also on that south wall closest to the gym door was the boys rep. office. First when I went to school was Jim Johnson and then Chuck Bowe.
