Historic Hood River

Notes
Although this photo is badly damaged it still shows some interesting action. The location is the field behind the old Hood River High School on May Street, and the period is the 1920’s. There is a companion photo of the track team members holding a banner for “Champions, Mid-Columbia League, 1924.” The gymnasium is still there, now serving the May Street elementary school.

It shouldn’t be too hard to find out who the HR athlete winning the hurdle race is.
It looks as if lanes also ran through the middle of the track. They sometimes did that if they didn’t have a long enough straight stretch for the sprints.
Nice hurdles, but probably didn’t tip so well when you hit them.

Even as a youngster going to May Street Elementary, I was always fascinated that the school seemed to change when walking into the gym. It was like walking into the past. It was many years later that I was shown the old locker rooms and showers that still exist below. At the time, it was a janitor’s closet. Not sure if they are still there or not.

This gym underwent a major seismic retrofit 2 or 3 years ago, so it should be around for a while.

Looks like a tall cyclone fence on the upper left of the photo, wonder if they had tennis courts way back then. Early sixties we still ran the hurdles there except it was on the east side of the field and ran south to north.

Love the spectators moving along with the jumper, especially junior on his bike. Does anyone know what that style of hat was called that was so in fashion during this era? It is very noticable in this photo?
