Historic Hood River
Town of Belmont

Notes
This 1883 plot of the Town of Belmont came to me as a result of a discussion about the location of the planing mill in the Belmont District. It seems in 1883 Messrs. Lamberson and Avery formed the Land and Cottage Association of Hood River. I’m guessing Messrs. Victor, Hall, Frank and Dayton were investors. They laid out a small u-shaped town with streets named after themselves. Based on the quarter sections referenced it appears the town was to be bounded by Belmont Street on the south, Country Club Road on the west, and Frankton Road on the east.
This was the same year Henry Coe and his brother platted Hood River proper (downtown). While Belmont never developed to these plans, it appears at least Mr. Frank got a street named after him.
As for the location of the Stanley Smith planing mill? I’m pretty confident it was west of Country Club Road, west of the Saddle Club.

I remember reading that E.L. Smith established a store in the Frankton/Belmont area in the 1870’s. It sounded like he was convinced that is where a town would grow, but eventually gave up and moved his store to downtown Hood River in the 1880’s where a town was definitely growing.

hey I know that drawing!

I’ll bet you do, @starboard, since it is at the top of the stack for all the title searches in that part of town.

What was the story behind the internal part of the U? There is a block of land 1,980 x 1,650 feet that was not included in the plat.
