This lantern slide shows the Tooth Rock viaduct when it was new. Note the active slide area. This was not an easy spot for road building. It’s amazing we have this highway, the railroad, and four lanes of interstate in this same spot today.

A few decades ago I was surprised and appreciated that a partial collapse was repaired in the center of this picture. The east portal of the highway tunnel is below the viaduct at the left.
Through the notch above this is an interesting walk on the original wagon road .

There must have been some old timers that shook their heads at the idea of building a road through this terrain.
This photo also makes me wonder how well the railroad company and the road builders got along.
