Fred and Joy Mason Tooley’s album identifies the location of their farm and first home with the “X” on this 1918 postcard. My best read of this image places the X at the current location of the Dalles Wahtonka High School. I believe most of the notes in this album were written by daughter Carol Jean.
Other images in the album show a farm location called “Tooley Acres” at Tooley Lake, west of this location. It’s not clear if they had a second farm location, or if it was farmed by another relative. There is some evidence they were farming there at a later date than this image.

If the barn center of photo still exists it is now the Ford Dalles riders club’s home.
Today’s 10th street was the entrance to the Chenowith area and The Dalles from 7 mile hill road. If you look south across the road in today’s view you can see the White House building which was constructed as the early chenowith school.
I can see Highway 30, looking like a dirt path. Heading around the corner towards Tooley lake and Rowena loops. We know the old Railway (vacated 1902) was used as hwy.30 from the loops to Chenowith creek, which is the line of trees west of the fields and barn

In the 60’s this was the Delbert Doane place, although it was much smaller than in 1918. My mother and aunt owned the house across the road from the 60’s to the 80’s.., Built in 1891 by the Jesse Hostetler family. The road was called the Dalles-Hood River Road and connected to Hwy. 30. Today its Irvine St. West. The Hostetler house is still there.
