The caption identifies this as the “Amphitheater where program was held night before Legion climb– Tilly Jane/ Cloud Cap Historic District.” You can see another perspective of the camp in this image. The amphitheater has recently been restored.
Given the climb started before dawn the next day, I suspect the festivities didn’t get too wild. The year of this image is unknown, but the American Legion climb was held every year from about 1921 to 1941.
