Historic Hood River
Tight Squeeze
9-3-2026

Notes
Even before the Bonneville Dam was constructed this was a tight piece of real estate. The original 1915 route of the Columbia River Highway required construction of the Tooth Rock Viaduct which is still accessible as the Columbia River Highway State Trail. Construction of the Bonneville Dam forced relocation of the old highway with the construction of the Tooth Rock Tunnel, which now serves the eastbound lanes of I-84. It also forced the railroad south into a tunnel. In later decades construction of the viaduct for I-84 westbound would cover the railroad tunnel, so it now can only be seen from the water or a train.

Is that AI? Said with a smile.
I am always so busy negotiating the freeway through this area that I never have time to study the landscape.

That explains the odd stairway at the Eagle Creek exit, from the original highway 30 to the adjusted version–I could never quite figure out why that staircase was there. Are there other staircases on the reconnected highway trail?
