Historic Hood River
Ted Schlief’s View of the World
6-21-2022

Notes
I wasn’t planning on posting the reverse of the Hesler’s menu, but the more I looked at Ted Schlief’s artwork the more I realize how masterful it is. It’s attractive, uncluttered, and it gives a great perspective of where a tourist might be coming from or heading to. I was surprised to see Highway 35 is “closed during winter months.”

I posted some information about Lehman Hesler on yesterday's photo. He died of heart problems in 1956 at age 44. I could not find any information if his wife Mary Elizabeth “Betty” continued the business.

Here we go…under the year 1967

If I am reading the Hood River News article correctly, Betty Hesler sold the business to Charburger in 1967.

That is what it sounds like. She must have run it by herself for twenty years.

Now , the last time I was in HR, the property just sits there. What an eyesore!
When my family moved to HR in 1966 we stayed at the nearby motel & ate at Hesler’s Broiler. .
I continued to live in HR for over 50 years.

The map pre-dates Interstate 5 and 80N, which were in progress from the late 1950's to mid-1960's. This likely dates the menu to the 1950s.

Good point, kmb. I was guessing it might be their last (1967) menu but the map suggests otherwise.
