Historic Hood River

We have two copies of this image, which let me test my instincts.  From the unlabeled one I decided the cabinet card was in the 1890’s style, the hill looked like the Frankton area, right off Country Club, and the picket fence reminded me of Civil War veteran Edward David Calkins home (here and here).  Fortunately we have a second print which was labeled “J. D. Calkins Home, Hood River, Frankton District”.  I wonder if the “J” is a bad transcription of a script “T”, as I can’t find any reference to a J. D. Calkins in Hood River.

I think the house below is where Tom and Edna Calkins lived from the 1930s to the 1960s.  Could this be an earlier view of that house (before the Calkins owned it)? We’ve seen several other examples of complicated roof-lines being removed from old houses.  My theory is the entire solarium structure was sliced off the north face, leaving the simple lines we see today.

From 1910 to 1929 Tom and Edna lived at 721 State Street on downtown Hood River, which looks nothing like this house.
