Summer Reading at Cloud Cap

What better way to relax on a hot summer day than to read a good book? We saw another view of these women reading at Cloud Cap Inn circa 1893 in this image. They are sisters Anne and Bess Lang, along with friend Lou Eaton. Now that we have the Hood River Glacier for that period online, we can verify the information we had from other sources. The September 30, 1893 Glacier reported:
Misses Annie and Bessie Lang of The Dalles and Miss Eaton of Portland went to Cloud Cup, Tuesday, to remain a week. Hon. M. A. Moody and a party from The Dalles will join them to-day.
What do you think was the summer read in 1893?

I would guess anything that we now know as classics, such as " Great Expectations", "Jane Eyre", "David Copperfield", etc. Probably Shakepeare, and no doubt they would have been into the ladies fashion books and magazines of the era.
Ofcourse we know that this was in the "big main room" which would have been the lobby of Cloud Cap.
Though there is the big fireplace in that room, I am thinking it might have been chilly considering how they are dressed.
Bill P: did any of those chairs survive? Seems I have seen at least one old rocking chair that could have come from that time…..

this picture could be used by the SMART (start making a reader today) program…..did almost this same thing last week at Mt. Rainier’s Paradise Lodge.

T he window is the front desk, so to speak, with the little office behind the counter. There was a large dining room with a fireplace if I recall correctly. Then the kitchen, which for many years was used as a wood room and has now been put back to be the kitchen….

Unfortunately the lens was not good enough for me to make out exactly what they are reading, but I can see that the picture in the book is of a cowboy shooting his pistol into the air. The classics, as in cowboy dime novels?

Going to Cloud Cap must have been a common thing for Mr. Moody and the Langs. The Hood River News, July 6, 1910 has the following:
Malcolm Moody, accompanied by the Misses Lang of The Dalles, came down Sunday and made his usual trip to Cloud Cap Inn for the Fourth. The party was taken to the Inn in two automobiles.
