Often old photographs are so rigidly posed that we assume the subjects were stern and emotionless. This image of a summer outing circa 1915 shows Hood River residents in a less formal moment, where we can get a little better sense of them as real people.

I have to wonder if they’re picking up ticks in all that brush.

WWI is in their immediate future….one wonders what happens to the young men…..besides the tick thing.

Probably not Henry David Thoreau. Maybe a 1910’s version of Bhagwan and Ma Sheela with their sannyasisns, or just a mom and dad on a nature hike with their children and spouses.
It looks like the area has been logged.
I wonder what that man on the left is contemplating. The man on the right is pointing to the grove at the top of the hill.

Photography was expensive back then – so yes, people posed for photographs, probably in the same way they used to pose for paintings.
