Fortunately this is labeled so we know it is a reenactment. The image is dated June 15, 1929. The stagecoach drivers are Pete Mohr and George Lage. I’m not sure what event called for this reenactment, but notes on the reverse suggest it was used in the newspaper.

Rear loaders such as this backed into platforms at train stations to pick up passengers destined for the owner hotel. No stepping into mud or dust at station or hotel ~

I would expect a hotel wagon to have only one man on the box, a well dressed driver, with a footman at the rear for assisting passengers ~

Possibly like a 4th of July parade….Wonder what happened to that old stagecoach.
I think that that particular Pete Mohr would be Peter John, who was married to Rose. If in fact that is him, he was the first white child born in Hood River County, which was Wasco County then. The George Lage would definitely be Dr. Lage the son of Ed and Mabel (Riddell) Lage. 1910-1978. Served as a captain in the army in WWII.

That’s OK Charlott. We seem to be moving to not celebrating July 4th on July 4th, so June 15th works just as well.

I’m sure Kenn is correct about this coach being a rearloader, but I don’t remember ever seeing a picture of a old hotel with a loading platform high enough to accomodate a coach like this one. Did they use some kind of ladder apparatus for passengers?

A stagecoach would have a boot under the drivers feet for express and mail and no undercut body for sharp turns in town. This many windows would make for a very cold winter or dusty summer road journey, but a nice depot wagon.design.

You can see the workings of the brakes pretty well and see how the cab is undercut, both to create a seating bench and to give clearance for the front wheels in a turn.

I usually just enjoy the history here and don’t comment, but on this one I am going to. I am amazed at the resemblance of Peter Mohr and one of my cousins. I called them Uncle Pete and Aunt Rose when I was a child. Pete is my Grandfather’s brother. For Charlotte – my grandparents are Alf and Maggie Mohr.

Buzz, no platform needed at the hotel, a step stool would suffice for the back door as it does for the side door of a stage ~

It says "Marquette" and looks like a family crest.
