Arline Moore identified these gents as Merle Gessling and Olin Spaulding, though I might be misreading the spelling of the names. She dates the image to 1910.
In 1911 Spaulding’s Tailor Shop advertises it is one door east of the Hood River Banking and Trust Company. That would place it on the north side of Oak Street, east of 3rd, where Waucoma Book Store currently resides. The business moved to the basement of the Brosius Building shortly after that date, so Arline Moore’s date is probably pretty accurate.
Gessling was a baseball buddy of Max Moore. He played short stop.

Olin was the son of Rev. Frank Spaulding. When he was about 15 years old the family was camping. While swimming a couple of his brothers got into trouble and his mother attempted to save them, all were lost.
He was a veteran of WWI having been a Sgt. in the 165th Aero Squadron.
I believe his wife’s name was Sarah.

Charlott mentions Rev. Frank Spaulding, which is a familiar name to me from Washington State History, so I looked him up.

Olin Spaulding was born in Para, Brazil in 1894. He died in 1969 and is buried in The Dalles.

Thank you for posting this wonderful picture of my maternal grandfather, M. C. "Gus" Gessling. He went on to a successful business career as part owner of the Triangle Paint Company in Berkeley CA. He was also a most talented grandfather.
