Notes

Laraway Collection: Glass plate negatives taken by W.F. Laraway between 1895 and 1928, donated by his descendants.

This is one of the more unusual Laraway portraits, with a donkey and a child holding an unlabeled bottle of liquid refreshment. I believe this is from Glenwood, Iowa circa 1900 because it matches two other photos which include the Glenwood town square.

I was looking for a wire to trip the camera.

Is that a wire in the extreeeme lower left, or an artifact?

This is a perfectly executed portrait, with everything from the donkey's nose to the three humans in sharp focus, but the background nicely blurred. That's what creates the "3-D" sensation.

I don't see any trip wire. Mechanical timers were definitely available in this era, or Laraway might have had an assistant to release the shutter. The line at the bottom left it just a scratch.
