Perhaps I am reading this image wrong, but it looks to me like these men are doing a little avalanche control and snow clearing on the Columbia River Highway with sticks of dynamite. The man in the middle has two sticks ready to go. The image is from January, 1928.

Looks to me like they could be removing a snow drift which resulted from several days of the east wind blowing.

I can just see them blowing that up and half the hillside coming down. It might not even be the Gorge. Maybe up above Parkdale on the Cooper Spur Road somewhere. Suppose that we will never know exactly the location.

The negative identifies the location as the Columbia River Highway. Not sure where along the highway, though.

Would they blow-up the drift after just having cleared the road?

Looks like that stretch of the old highway leading down to the Mosier tunnels. Hey, maybe those pieces of old car that lie on the south side in a swale are from a dynamite trip gone awry….

The boxes are blurred so I can’t read them, but the man on the left has two sticks which look like dynamite in his hands. They’ve got long fuses, so I don’t think they are road flares.
