This Alva Day image shows a scene along the Columbia River Highway from January 10, 1928. The man to the right appears to be using a shovel to clear the road, while two boxes of dynamite sticks stand at the ready. Perhaps they used the dynamite to clear the snow from the chute before they shoveled it out?
There’s a nice Model T in the background, and a third man slightly up slope from the highway. We may actually know the name of one of the men, as The Hood River Glacier two days later described the work Maintenance Engineer Lytle performed clearing the road between Hood River and Cascade Locks. There’s also an account of this storm in the January 5, 1928 Hood River Glacier.
