When my husband was a boy, he went to a shoe shine station in Portland, with his grandfather. He also rode the trolley. His grandfather told him that some day the trolley would disappear. Maybe his grandfather was trying to give a crash course in sites that would disappear.

Before the present sports shoes and plastic shoes, Saturday night was line up all the shoes on the hearth and the two oldest polished them to a shine for Sunday church. How many even own shoe polish/wax now?

In the 1950’s, there was a shoe shine stand in the Bon Ton Barber Shop on downtown Oak Street.

Jim Mehlhoff still had it….but it is long gone. The only place I see anything like a shoe shine stand, is at the airport. Talked to the guy that was in charge and he had been at this particular stand for many years. Business men like shoes that really look great, and this was the guy!
