Historic Hood River
Shipbuilder’s Tools
8-17-2021

Notes
This week’s artifact is a collection of shipbuilder’s tools recently donated to the museum. Wood ships wood regularly develop leaks, and tools like these were used to force waterproofing materials between the boards in the hull. The donor believes his grandfather used these tools in a Portland shipyard around 1900. If you have any details about this process please share.

Great video starboard. It really answered all my question about how these tools could possibly help stop a ship from sinking.
