Thanks are due again to Bill Seaton for this fine view of the right half of Mary Hawkes’ General Science classroom at Hood River High School, 1956. Do you recognize anyone? This is easy as some HHR readers are present. Bill or I will add annotations later today.
The textbook is called, “Science For Better Living.”

This was probably Mrs. Hawkes science class. She was chosen Oregon teacher of the year that year.

Mrs. Hawkes was an excellent teacher. Looking back, the teachers I remember best were generally the strictest.

one additional note……the biggest pile of books is appropriate as my memory of Barbara Bible is that she was probably the most serious student in our class of 1959…well maybe except for Walter Busse but he isn’t in this picture…….interesting comment Buzz…had not thought of that perspective but I agree….the ones that let us get away with "stuff" were on the not so good roster….

I too have memories of Mrs Hawkes; freshman year 60/61. I also mowed her lawn for at least one summer.

Because he had come from California and apparently whatever the science class was , was a requirement for graduation in the state of Oregon. Just wish he was here so we could ask. I remember him talking on various occasions about Mrs. Hawkes.

Buzz, I am pretty sure that Norma is right. I only took 1 class from Ms. Hawkes and it was General Science.

Checked my annual for that year and the unknown boy is not in the class photos.

Why don’t some of you look in your year book and you could probably figure out who the unknown guy is. If you can’t figure it out, let me know, as I have all 4 Hood River year books and might be able to help.
Barbara Loomis graduated from Wy’east. Her father must have paid tuition for her to go there. Also a gal by the name of Wendy MacEwan or something like that who lived in town but went to Wy"east to graduate.

Barbara’s parents who had lived on Oak St. built a home out on Westcliff Drive, which was in the WyEast district, hence why she changed schools. I took chemistry in my freshman year from Mrs. Hawkes and photography my sophmore year.

Barbara Loomis transferred to WyEast because her family moved from Oak Street to West Cliff Road.
Wendy also went to school with us. Assume her family also moved.
I am with Bill. I only had one class with Mrs. Hawkes and it was freshman year.
Barbara. I checked my freshman annual to see if I could identify that one student. Didn’t see any picture of him. Also checked 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th grade pictures and don’t see anyone that looks like him.

Sad to have read the obituaries for Roy and Loretta Irwin in the Hood River news 😩 Roy Passed away November 27, 2017 & Loretta November 29, 2017. Brother and Sister.
Loretta attended our 50th class reunion upon my urging her 😊. She graduated from WyEast high school"¦ And also attended their 50th.class.reunion

If you had Mrs. Hawkes for chemistry, did you do any experiments with radioactive materials?
Maybe that is what happened to the mystery boy. One too many experiments.
In the July 31, 1958 Corvallis Gazette, Oregon Teacher of the Year is science teacher, Mrs. Mary Hawkes from Hood River.
She was a graduate of Colorado State College. She attended institutes of nuclear studies and chemistry and is credited with expanding the HR curriculum to include experiments with radioactive materials. As a side project she conducts a spray residue testing program for fruit growers.

I remember Barbara Loomis from Stste Street when we were pre-schoolers. During fhe war, she and her mom and older brother Bobby (I think) lived in that big grey mansion across State Street from the tall house where Freddy Duckwall later lived. We lived in the house next door, to the east, with the spring-house and pond.When her dad (Harold, I think) came home from the war, the family moved downhill about half a block. At May Street School she had the misfortune to have a Miss Lewis for home room. One snowy day, Mrs. Loomis sent Barbara to school in snow pants, because she had so far to walk. Miss Lewis came up to Barbara’s desk and smacked her on the back of the head so hard that her forehead and nose hit her desk. If I had been the Loomises, I would’ve paid any amount of money to get my kid away. As far as I know, Miss Loomis was never brought to account for this abuse. Mrs. Loomis told my mom about the incident, and we were all distressed.
