Imagine the effort to get one of these band saw blades on and off the saw. A similar one over 20′ long remained in the brush at Palmer after the mill burned in 1907. I have wondered why it did not go up to the new mill in 07 and how and why someone recently removed it.

No expert on sawmills, but head filer and sawyer who run the head rig were highest paying and most prestigous jobs in a mill. Blades were made out of best steel made and old blades made great knives. Changing saws was down to a science and done rapidly as many time they had to be changed midshift. Screaming, noisy sawmills were not my thing.

A visit to the Hull Oaks steam sawmill south of Corvallis is worthwhile. They can cut up to 6′ diameter and 80′ long, the only mill that can do so, and one of the last steam operations in the nation..

The short door in the end wall of the building is interesting, as are the "posts" that stick below the bottom cords of the roof trusses.
