This Trailways bus trip was interrupted by a mechanical malfunction. It looks like they got the flames under control before any serious damage was done, though I suspect some of the passengers had second thoughts about completing the round-trip by bus.
Also, here’s a reminder that you’re all invited to an “opening” of an Alva Day exhibit at the museum this Sunday, November 3, 2-5PM. At 3PM Matt and I will be talk about the photo project, followed at 3:30 by Aaron Nice, who will be reprising his Cemetery Tales role as Alva Day. Admission is free, so come on down and join us.

Wonder where the $3.74 round trip fare was from where to where? I am thinking the men there might be members of the Hood River fire department called in to assist. At least they saved their luggage……….

No duffel bags in those days. Just hard sided suitcases.
Seems like only the military used duffel bags back in those days.

I would guess the "mechanical malfunction" was caused by bald tires…..a flat tire can overheat and catch on fire or set the grease/oil alight…those old diesel buses were like a rolling "Exxon Valdez" due to the oil and fuel leaks!

There was an upside to those old army duffel bags. When you could use your feet to pack everything you owned in this world into two of them, life was simpler.

The depot was located across the street from what was once the 88 cent store. I think that is the location that was later the PowWow Room. The first block on your left as you come into town.

Bald tires, stains on the dirt, jacking up the bus…looks like it must have been a real scare, but did the HRFD save the day, and they all came from a luau party?

The bus depot was in the bowling alley that was where Betty’s and the mall are now.

And it has been up on the Heights where the Hispanic grocery is, downtown at the Hood Riv er Hotel, Betty’s, and on the Port where the I think the Chamber is. Was it once at Panda Bear Inn?

We were told anyone with "quality" did not walk up past The Pastime, as that was the sinful place. To go to Paris Fair from Penney’s you were suppose to cross the street and never go up that side. One could stop at the drinking fountain and take a very long drink so you could look to see if you could see anything sinful. Just made it more interesting to sneak up that way on occasion. Darn it, never saw a thing worth reporting…..
