This fine plate showing the cannery at Rooster Rock is from the Ruth Guppy collection at the History Museum. You can see the fish wheel which provided plenty of fish to feed the cannery. There is also some sort of wheel beneath the building. I’m not sure what purpose it serves.
Records of the cannery are archived at the Oregon Historical Society. Their records state, “It was built by Antone Fastabend for Samuel Elmore, who had a large cannery business in Astoria, Oregon.” They date the records to 1906-1938.
We saw a print of this image ten years ago, but this is a cleaner scan from the negative. There are some interesting comments in that earlier post.

Definitely can see why it was closed down because of silting in with sand.
I read somewhere that it was not good planning to build the cannery here, because of the shifting sands.

There used to be (maybe still) a very large picture ; Crown Point view of this area in the office at the Anderson’s Tribute Center on Belmont. It was there in 2008.

The wheel under the cannery is of a fish scow, a portable fish wheel.
