Historic Hood River
Reconstruction
3-8-2023

Notes
in January 1937 the Hood River White Salmon Interstate bridge was barely 12 years old, but the rising Bonneville Pool required major reconstruction. A lift span was needed for taller ships to clear the bridge in the channel, and the White Salmon approaches needed to be raised to meet the state route above the flood plain. This image from January 13 shows the construction crane from Gilpin Construction ready to begin the work of rebuilding almost the entire north half of the structure.

It looks like they have already started on one of the pier modifications for the new lift towers. After comparing some photos, I suspect that the channel span shown in this image is the same one that is in use today but that it was modified to be connected to the lift mechanism on the new towers. The bridge is schedule for a four day closure in May to replace the lift cables.

It looks miserably cold.
