If there’s turkey in the oven there should be snow on the mountain. Get up there while it’s good, and have a great Thanksgiving holiday. Historic Hood River will be back Monday with new posts.
Here are several Crag Rats ready for what is described as a long ski trip on Mt. Hood. They are identified as John, Arni(?), and Sulo Annala, along with Bill Hukari.

For sure-W.T. (Bill) Hukari is second from the right.
I remember his profile quite well.
I believe it is 2 Hukari and 2 Annala"boys"
They might be at Tilly Jane-seeing the snow covered building behind them…

I am fairly certain these names aren’t in order. I think that is Sulo, the second from left. I think that is Arne Annala on the far left. Surely some of the Annala’s and Hukari’s can chime in here and make a positive identification as to who is who.
Those parkas they have on are the first ones I remember. My Dad had one and I think they were from WWII, probably surplus or brought or sent home from others. I know they were wool and very, very warm, especially when they had the hoods on and that fur pulled around their faces tight. I think my Dad’s is up at the Crag Rat Hut. Some one told me once that that was wolverine fur, but I am not certain about that…..

Wanted to thank LE for reminder of invitation to all of you to come share memories. Remember that it is on Dec. 4, not every Monday–need to allow time for all of you to return from Thanksgiving gatherings! LE’s travel to the Blue Mts. reminds me of my childhood Thanksgivings always spent at my grandparents ranch in eastern Oregon. It was a much longer trip from Hood River then. How I-84 has changed things!

Animal fur is amazingly warm. I had a hat made from beaver fur once that I couldn’t wear unless it was at least 20 below. Made my head sweat and that is the worst thing you can do when it is cold. Happy Thanksgiving.

Today was the memorial service of a Crag Rat and the grandson of one old the Bartmass’s mentioned in here who was an undertaker in The Dalles. Ned had the distinction of having a heart attack on the mountain in a February when they always had their winter retreat. And with the help of one of the Hukaris who was also an EMT, they saved Ned and got him down the mountain in one piece. Ned was also the leader of the local Boy Scout troop in HR for many years.
