This Crag Rat is helping a friend touch up her sun screen atop Mt. Hood during the Legion Climb of 1940.

Okay Bill, who is it? Guess I shall work on it. Notice that shirt, wood in those days and had to be pretty warm on a day which looks like it is clear.

My bet is on a Woolrich shirt. Isn’t the lady pretty?> So healthy looking – like a movie star of the times.I also like the hiking staffs. Her manicure is perfect too. Great picture!

The way the woman is dressed I am inclined to think that she is either the Queen of the American Legion Climb or one of the court.

Tony Krevak came somewhat later than this. It isn’t Betty Calmettes and I feel somewhat safe in saying that it isn’t Elaine Drake, who was the daughter of Leo and Stella (Perry) Drake. However, it might be……..

No Charlott….I think the young lady is Beverly Gross from Portland who was Miss Oregon and a Hollywood hopeful.
I found a newspaper photo of her and several other ladies posing for the "Miss Streamline" which I still haven’t figured out what that contest was.
We need that scrapbook!!

I believe the picture is of Beverly Gross (Miss Streamline) and the Crag Rat is probably Bill Cochran. Bill Cochran was the escort for the queen, at the crowning coronation at Legion Camp the evening before the climb.. Elaine Drake was crowned queen by Queen Claire Erickson of the Winter Sports Association. The crowd at Legion Camp was estimated to be in excess of 3500, with cars parked along the side of the road all the way down to the Cloud Cap junction. Can’t imagine that many people assembled at little Legion Camp.

I am certain the fellow is Mr. Donnerberg, owner of The Book and Art store downtown near Keirs Drugstore. My Mom, Miriam Nickerson worked for him in 1930-32 before she worked at Keirs as waitress and cook.

The lady in this picture is Beverly Gross who was Miss Oregon in 1940. She climbed to the top of Mount Hood where she was crowned. Several pictures of this event were in Look Magazine in 1940.

As someone who appreciates the history of Mt. Hood and has been to the summit many times, I was fortunate to have the highest bid when the scrap book of the July 21, 1940 American Legion / Crag Rats climb was recently auctioned on eBay. I received the scrapbook with its many photos and newspaper articles at my Portland, OR home yesterday, (Feb. 7, 2019) and based on the photos inside, the lady in the photo above does appear to be Beverly Gross, though I’m only 90% sure of that, as the evidence across multiple photos is not 100% conclusive. I do not know who the gentleman is.
