A member of the Crag Rats is operating a radio set at what looks to be the Legion Camp near Tilly Jane on Mt. Hood. We take it for granted that we’re almost always in communication, but sending messages from Mt. Hood was a novelty in this era. We have evidence ham radios were used on several of the Legion Climbs. A radio set like this would have been a useful tool during a mountain rescue, so it makes sense the Crag Rats would have used the annual Legion Climb to practice using the equipment. We saw another example of a radio on the Legion Climb this in this post.

If I recall correctly, Tilly Jane was the nickname of Caroline Elliot. Caroline was the wife of William Ladd (the Portland banker who built Cloud Cap)…
