This Olga Plog image opens up an interesting window into a fascinating figure from Alaska history. We’ve seen other images from her visit to Skagway in the summer of 1925. Apparently she stayed at the Pullen House, which had an interesting history. Harriett Pullen created it in 1901 and ran it until her death in the 1940s. As of 10 years ago its chimney was still visible, though the rest of the building is long gone.
Harriett Pullen’s biography is worth a read: from arriving in Alaska in the middle of the Gold Rush to making pies for miners, then hauling freight to make enough money to buy this building and take advantage of the local tourist boom (contributed to by Hood Riverites like Olga Plog and Alva Day).

My first thought when I saw this photo was not Alaska.
Lots of interesting history reading about Harriett Pullen and Captain William Moore whose Skagway home she purchased. One tough and enterprising lady.
