In the 1950s you could go downtown to get your custom prescription mixed up, your film developed, your watch mechanism cleaned, and grab a birthday card. Well, you can still do one of those!
Kresse’s Drug Store was of course a long time anchor of downtown. I believe the corner of 2nd and Oak held a drug store from about 1905 to the 1990s. Zeigler’s Gifts and Stationery was in the Brosius Block, probably where Anana’s Boutique is today. Sche’s Jewelry was in a block of buildings now replaced by the new 310 Oak, housing Doppio Coffee.

Sche’s Jewelry shows a lot of Dishes (China) and I dare say a case of silver tableware. All of that was so popular in the day Now you have trouble getting your children and grandchildren to even take such family gems.

Funny, nels. I have a “candy dish” which is nicer than anything in my house. Never use it.

Yeah, @Arthur. And I bet it is from an older relative’s house that they considered very special. I have a complete silverware service for 12 including soup spoons and iced tea spoons, about 9″ long, a Southern ‘thing.’ And can’t find a taker in the younger relatives.
As eldest daughter I was supposed to receive the Chinaware in Greek Key pattern – but that’s another story. All this went with 5 uncles and aunts and their wives and children for holidays at grandmother’s house.

I remember going to Zeigler’s with my mother, and I believe they gave green stamps, which I helped lick and put into booklets. Or maybe they redeemed them? Maybe someone else remembers more clearly.
