Plog Family Outing

We end postcard week with this nice real photo postcard from Olga Plog. It’s part of a pair of cards from Edna and Olga to “Marfy” describing an excursion up Mt. Hood. They must have been placed in an envelope together because we have no postmark or address.
Dear “Marfy”, I’m so sorry that we had to disappoint you. Sis and I had visions of you going back alone. But we just “terribly” busy those days. The plasterer was here and the washing and ironing wasn’t done.
This is a snap of our crowd just after we got off the truck and were ready to pack the last 2 miles (seemed like 6 tho). There are 12 in the party but they don’t all show. We feel so “smart” cause we made it to the top! Certainly had a great time. Last night the whole family and neighbors fought a small forest fire. Now Marfy, don’t you forget to come & see us. Guess I’ll have to quit my space is gone. Olga

This may not be the Plog family, but it looks like 3 of the 6 Plog children are in this picture – 3rd from left could be Louis Plog. Certainly, the two women on the right are Olga and Edna Plog.
Edna was 8 years older than Louis – so if that is Louis and he is about 18…that makes Edna 26 and that means this picture was taken around 1921. That is certainly not Mrs Plog 2nd from the left.
Marfy – no idea. Could have been Martha Struck Brunquist – but where would she be that she needed to come visit??? I believe she lived most of her life in the valley.

I went to school with Leland Plog. I wonder if he is related to some of the people in this picture.

Several look like they have bed rolls and others are carrying boxes, so maybe they were planning on overnighting some where. They certainly don’t look like they were prepared to climb above the timberline. If not heading to the American Legion camp are, I wonder if they were headed for Blossom Cabin in the area of present Timberline Lodge? That would put them about two miles by foot from Government Camp.

Edna’s card shows this party (minus the little girl) well above the Timberline, with plenty of greasepaint and alpenstocks. I think this card shows them on their way to set up camp the day before their climb.

I also thought "Marfy" could be Marty Brunquist – maybe an old german style t? It would be great to see the original writing! With all the washing and ironing of a big family I’m glad they out for fun every now and then!
Olga mentions "neighbors", so maybe that will help identify who the others were.
