Historic Hood River
Pine Grove High School Class of 1903-04 (or 1905)

Notes
We have two copies of this image with slightly different information. One indicates this was the high school students at Pine Grove School in 1903-04, and the other indicates it was the students who had written notes for the first newsletter, 1905. Fortunately they agree on the student names.
I wonder if the reference to the “first news letter” refers to the Hood River Newsletter which started publication in that year.
In the back row we have Earl Clark and Miss Mabel Riddell (Mrs. Ed Lage) (Principal)
In the middle row we have Elton Newman, Earl Newman, Charles Lage, Mabel Robinson, and Nellie Perry
In the front row we have Marion Sproat, Ivy Clark, Blanche Harbison, Viola Miller, Ada Mark, Zena Miller and William Clark
Charlott
Nellie Perry, would become Nell Wells as an adult. She married my great uncle Francis Warren “Warny” Wells. She grew up on what is now Fir Mountain Road, near and on the east side of the road just north of the Jackson Cemetery.
William Berrian “Willie or Will” Clark was also my great-uncle who also grew up on Fir Mountain Road. He was the youngest son of Lucius and Ada (Berrian) Clark.
I notice an Ivy Clark, but she is of no relationship to our family.
Wendell
This particular Charles Lage was the son of Hans and Lena (Hoeck) Lage. He died when he was only 25 years old.
Viola Miller 1890-1953 married Howard Shoemaker. She was the sister of Albert Miller who married Harriet “Hattie” Wells.
Zena Miller married a man by the name of Mans, but later divorced.
Marion Sproat lived with her parents Charles and Nettie Sproat in the vicinity of The Boys Pine Grove Store, where her father farmed.

Assuming the Charles Lage in this photo is the same as “Baby Charles” in the Hans Lage family photo circa 1883 (http://historichoodriver.com/index.php?showimage=1691), that would make Charles around 21 or 22 in this photo, which would be a little old for a high school student. Perhaps not everyone in this picture was a student?
