Here’s another fine view of mountain climbing attire from the early part of last century. These are the “Picture Rocks” near Cloud Cap Inn, where so many climbing parties gathered after an ascent to celebrate their accomplishment. A note from 1982 indicates these climbers are “Bartmess family.”

Know exactly where those rocks are. Never heard them referred to as "Picture Rocks" before, but that makes a lot of sense, as who could ever count the number of photos taken from that area. Also many mountaineering people’s ashes have been placed in that area over the years.
I don’t recall ever having seen the pant portion of those women’s attire before. I wonder if they were going to or had actually climbed the mountain. Maybe they were just hiking around up there. Don’t suppose we will ever know.

I would like to see these rocks, wondering how far south/uphill and if they are visible from Cloud Cap.

If this is the Bartmess family, it sounds like Cloud Cap and the mountain were often visited.
The July 21, 1894 The Dalles Chronicle gives a report of a Mazama climbing party. Only S.E. Bartmess is listed from the Bartmess family. There were a number of women who made the climb.

On the same page, the Pendleton ladies have formed a bicycle club and they are going to wear bloomers.
Just think how much more convenient those must have been, rather than dragging a dress up the side of a mountain or getting it stuck in the spokes of a bicycle.
Does anyone have access to this Lora Loew photograph album which features the Bartmess family of HR?
