This party from Hood River traveled all the way to Multnomah Falls for a picnic circa 1898. We only know the names of three of the picnickers: A.I. Mason, his wife Ollie, and their daughter Hattie Joy are on the left, marked with small “x’s”. You may remember them from the week we spent learning about their Liberty Home orchard.
This party probably traveled from Hood River by rail, though it is possible they traveled by sternwheeler through the Cascade Locks. While there were early attempts to build roads through the Gorge, the first real highway was almost two decades in the future.

Can you imagine climbing up there in those big heavy skirts? My guess is that they went by train and it stopped there letting people off for the day and later another train took them back up the Gorge.

I stumbled onto this web site and have spent hours enjoying these photos and comments. The man furthest right with jacket and tie, without going back, reminds me of the blacksmith.
