Historic Hood River
PERFECT CABIN?
4-7-2023

Notes

To me this is a perfectly staged portrait of a perfect cabin in the Iowa hills. That’s Laraway to the left. He’s holding something in his right hand, but I don’t think it’s the cable to release the shutter, so this was probably taken on a timer.

Laraway’s Iowa photos intrigue me and I plan to make a trip to the Iowa Hils. When it isn’t tornado season.
For such a staged photo, I wonder why the child was allowed to stand off to the side? Dressed in all their finery, I wonder if they even stepped inside the home. Quite the contrast.

What is the message for this photo? I assume this is a cabin for a farm family that works for them, or ….? They would obviously not live here.

I had the same question/comment regarding the contrast between their fine attire and the very humble abode behind them. Can we judge from the appearance of Laraway, his wife, or the children the approximate year of this photo? Would this be before they moved out west to Hood River, or after, when they went back for a visit?

The house in the distant left looks much nicer"¦ could this be a cabin his earlier relatives started in on their land? Will we ever really know"¦
