Historic Hood River
Paris Fair, 1993

Notes
I remember in the 1990s every April many of the downtown businesses would rotate locations around the business district. In this 1993 view you can see the Sailboard Warehouse had recently left for their location on Oak between Front and 1st. The “Muscle in Motion” gym was on the second floor. The Paris Fair Department Store had just closed 4 years earlier and their sign was still marking the corner.
This image was taken by Sally Donovan as part of her landmarks survey.

fond memories of this store in the 50s…..transactions sent to and from by cable up to the central cashier from the floor. not sure what that system was called.

I aways thought it was air in the tube.
Buck Parker
I thought it was spring-loaded, because I think a person pulled back a large lever to send it up to Myrtle Nance on the mezzanine. Of course, I could be way off, except for the Myrtle Nance part.
L.E.
I was upstairs once, but I can’t remember why.

I also L.E. but for me it was this morning…….

In my senior year at HRHS (Class of 1959) we had a big dance in the Odd Fellows lodge on the 3rd floor of this building.
Jeanie Senior
Seems to me the word pneumatic was used to describe the change-making tube system.
Arthur Babitz
Jeannie Senior, I recall being told that too, but I was unable to find anything in the Glacier about it. I searched for “pneumatic” “tube” “wire” and “cashier.” All I got was the marriage announcements for multiple Paris Fair cashiers. That database currently ends at 1928, so it’s possible it was installed after that.
