This is Harry Dewitt at his garage in December, 1916. The caption explains this is shortly after he dropped a Dodge on his foot. If you look carefully you can see the bandaged right foot.

1916 was two years after the Dodge Brothers began making Dodge’s. If you venture out to WAAAM, they have a 1916 Dodge in Museum 3.

Interesting thing that he is leaning on. Any ideas? It appears that a hanging metal screen has been added to cover the windows. A safety issue?

The "Automobile Trade Magazine" 1917 says:
Hood River, Ore.—With the merger of the Hood River Garage Co. and the Gilbert and DeWitt Co. the company will be known as the Gilbert & DeWitt Company. C.T. Wedemeyer, one of the incorporaters of the Hood River Garage company which recently erected one of the finest garages in the state has retired.

Here’s a newspaper account of the construction of this building which is apropos:
"HUMAN TOE FOUND IN EXCAVATION– A crew of men engaged in excavating for the new garage at the corner of Third street and Cascade avenue last Friday found a human toe, the severed member enclosed in a small bottle filled with some kind of preserving fluid. The toe, it is presumed, was once appended to a pioneer woodsman, who may have lost it in some early day logging accident. The toe was found on the former location of an old logging house patronized extensively in early days by loggers. Enclosed in the original bottle, the cork stopper of which is almost rotten, and accompanied by a typewritten inscription, "Owner please call and claim," the ancient toe has been placed on display in the show window of Keir’s drug store."
